Home Design Resolution Guide for 2014

Our friends at Zillow posted this article with tons of tips and tricks for the New Year.

Always and We Mean ALWAYS Have a Plan

Having a plan for well, anything, is always the key to success and when it comes to designing your home, it is no exception.

“Assign the following steps a timeframe to keep you on track, and before you begin, determine if the project requires a designer,” Melissa Klebanoff from Melissa Klebanoff Inter Design in Seattle said. “Write down everything you want to accomplish with your project, define it, gather photos and do a space plan if needed.”

Find Your Home Design Style and GET INSPIRED

This is my favorite step because you get to have fun. Decorating your home will not feel like a chore. You’re making your home into your space with your inspirations, influences and tastes. How could that be anything but fun?

However, it can be very overwhelming. Which color should you get? Does it go with that other color? And what about that fabric? Does it go with that?

If you’re someone like me who has many different tastes, designing your home can be mindboggling and overwhelming at times. That’s when you should ask yourself the following questions:

What purpose will that room serve? Is it going to be more of a retreat or a dual purpose room that should also be kid friendly?

Remember that it’s not about what’s trendy and ask yourself what will work for you and your family over time? If you have little kids, think about what will work for them (and you) when they get older. If you want to entertain and have guests over, consider that. It’s all about what you need.

For inspiration, look at magazines, Pinterest, Zillow, etc. and go with whatever speaks to you.

“Go to home improvement stores and design centers. Collect the finishes you’ll need and love — like carpet samples, stone samples, fabrics, furniture cuts, lighting ideas, appliance specs, paint colors and so on,” Klebanoff said.

Focus On One Room at a Time

Even though it may be hard, it’s best to only focus on one room at a time.

“If you have a weekend, develop a plan and focus on one room: paint the living room, and buy a few key pieces, knowing that you can add to it over the year,” Alissa Pulcrano of bright designlab in Portland, Oregon said. “Start with an overall design and then ‘chip away.’”

It sounds daunting, but it will be fun!

Are you Planning on Re-doing your Kitchen

According to Zillow, kitchens top the list for home design renovations in 2014.

More and more people are opting for open, homey and open concept kitchens this New Year.

“More and more people want an ‘open concept’ space and the feeling of comfort,” designer Vanessa DeLeon explained. “They want to be able to eat, entertain, relax and enjoy the space with the rest of the house.”

And who could blame them?

If you are thinking about renovating your kitchen this year, start looking for designers and contractors and make sure you check their references.

But most of all, have fun and happy designing.
